Cannot Access Template

Learn what to do when a template cannot be opened in the theme editor.

If you see a message saying "Cannot access" when trying to open a template in the theme editor, or if the template is simply not accessible, the cause is that there is no published content associated with that template.

Blog posts

At least one published blog post

Content → Blog posts

Products

At least one published product

Products → All products

Blogs

At least one blog

Content → Blog posts → Manage blogs

Collections

At least one published collection

Products → Collections

  1. Using the table above as a reference, create and publish at least one piece of the required content from your Shopify Admin

  2. Return to the theme editor and select the target template again

Once published content exists, you will be able to access the template.
